"In the Kimberley region of north-western Australia, some rock art dates back an astonishing 41,000 to possibly 50,000 years, making it among the oldest human-made artworks on Earth. Created by Indigenous Australians, this ancient art is found in rock shelters, on boulders, and flat rock surfaces. Estimates suggest tens of thousands of sites, many still undiscovered. The Gwion Gwion paintings, with their intricate details and dynamic poses, and the Wandjina spirits, with their large eyes and halo-like heads, showcase the diversity of styles. Artists used ochre pigments, carved into rock, applied beeswax and resin, and even arranged stones to create symbolic designs. Some scraped burnt earth to reveal contrasting colors. The durability of these artworks is remarkable, thanks to ochre’s strong bond with sandstone and the remote locations that have protected them from vandalism. Indigenous Rangers and archaeologists work together to manage and protect these sites, ensuring their preservation."--Munyao Matheka
