Scheduled to launch no later than May 2027, NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope mission will help uncover some of the biggest mysteries in the cosmos. The state-of-the-art telescope on the Roman spacecraft will offer the largest picture of the universe we’ve ever seen with the same depth and precision as the Hubble Space Telescope provides. https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/13295/

In an innovation for interstellar measurement, an international team led by Peking University announced on January 2, 2026, the first-ever direct mass measurement of a "Rogue Planet"—a planet that drifts through the galaxy without a parent star. By using a technique called "gravitational microlensing" simultaneously from ground-based telescopes and space-based observatories, researchers were able to calculate the planet's mass to be roughly that of Saturn. Theoretically, this dual-perspective innovation solves the "distance-mass" ambiguity that has plagued rogue planet research for decades. This milestone paves the way for the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to map thousands of these "invisible" worlds, revealing the true population of homeless planets that may actually outnumber the stars in our Milky Way.
