The Celtic Boii

& Gallia Narbonensis (South France).

The Boii (Latin plural, singular Boius; Greek Βόϊοι) were a Gallic tribe of the later Iron Age, attested at various times in Cisalpine Gaul (northern Italy), Pannonia (Hungary and its western neighbours), parts of Bavaria, in and around Bohemia (after whom the region is named in most languages; comprising the bulk of the Czech Republic), and Gallia Narbonensis. In addition the archaeological evidence indicates that in the 2nd century BC Celts expanded from Bohemia through the Kłodzko Valley into Silesia, now part of Poland and the Czech Republic. They first appear in history in connection with the Gallic invasion of north Italy, 390 BC, when they made the Etruscan city of Felsina their new capital, Bononia (Bologna). After a series of wars they were decisively beaten by the Romans in a battle near Mutina (Modena) and their territory became part of the Roman province of Cisalpine Gaul. According to Strabo, writing two centuries after the events, rather than being destroyed by the Romans like their Celtic neighbours,
[T]he Boii were merely driven out of the regions they occupied; and after migrating to the regions round about the Ister, lived with the Taurisci, and carried on war against the Daci until they perished, tribe and all — and thus they left their country, which was a part of Illyria, to their neighbours as a pasture-ground for sheep.

Around 60 BC, a group of Boii joined the Helvetii's ill-fated attempt to conquer land in western Gaul and were defeated by Julius Caesar, along with their allies, in the battle of Bibracte. Caesar settled the remnants of that group in Gorgobina, from where they sent two thousand to Vercingetorix's aid at the battle of Alesia six years later. The eastern Boii on the Danube were incorporated into the Roman Empire in 8 AD.

The Provincial at Rome:

And, Rome and the Balkans 80BC-AD14

This volume offers a new insight into the development of a great historian, as well as giving an exciting and immensely readable new approach to late Republican and early Imperial Roman history. Drafted in 1934-35, but laid aside in favour of 'The Roman Revolution' (1939), 'The Provincial at Rome' was to have been Ronald Syme's first book. It is a brilliantly written study of the enlargement of the Roman elite in the early empire, an analysis, in thirteen chapters, of the Emperor Claudius' enrolment of 'Gallic chieftains' into the Senate in AD 48. The edition also includes five unpublished papers dealing with Rome's conquest of the Balkans, a region Syme knew intimately.

 The Roman empire under Hadrian (ruled 117-38),
showing the location of the Cotini Celtic tribe
in the northern Carpathian mountains.
The Gotini (in Tacitus), who are generally equated to the Cotini in other sources, were a Gaulish tribe living during Roman times in the mountains approximately near the modern borders of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The spelling "Gotini" is only known from one classical source, the De Origine et situ Germanorum of Tacitus. Tacitus clearly distinguishes the Gotini from the similarly named Gotones, who he discussed in the immediately following passage. Tacitus described the Gotini as speaking a Gaulish language and working, to their degradation, in mining. Like their neighbours in the mountains, the Osi, they had to pay tribute to both the neighbouring Quadi and Sarmatians. Although the Gotoni lived in the midst of Suevic peoples, they were not GermanicThey probably lived in the area of modern western Slovakia, Moravia, and Silesia. They may have constituted all or part of the archaeological Púchov culture, with its center in Púchov. It has also been suggested that the same people are reported by Claudius Ptolemy as the Κῶγνοι. Ptolemy places them south of the Sidones, south of the Askiburgi mountains (probably the modern Sudeten mountains) but north of Hercynian valley. So as in Tacitus they are near the Buri and north of the Quadi. The tribe was apparently first mentioned in 10 BC in the so-called Elogium of Tusculum, an inscription from the time of Augustus found in Tusculum, south of Rome. It records how a legate of Illyricum entered relations of peace or war with the Cotini and Anarti. The "Cotini" are later mentioned by Dio Cassius in connection with the Marcomannic Wars. He reports that around 172 AD, the Cotini asked the Romans for land if they would attack the Marcomanni, and that they failed to do so, leading to their destruction. It has been suggested that to punish them, Marcus Aurelius moved all or some of the Cotini to Lower Pannonia, which happened not later than 180 AD. Roman inscriptions of 223-251 AD mention a Pannonian people known as the "cives Cotini" - the Cotini people.

The Acts of Simon Magus

in the First Century AD:

Book 1 - A Search in Secret Egypt

 Gnostic Sorcerer Simon Magus = G.S.S.M.  = 58
58 = EMERALD = 58 = SCIENCE = 58

INDIGO = 58 = AL+WAHID
The Gnostic sorcerer Simon Magus was the first supervillain of early Christian legend. Many tales tell of his magical battles with the first apostles, his attempts to corrupt the new Church with silver and strange heresies, and his final ignominious downfall before the Emperor Nero. Only now, after millennia of slander, can we hear Simon's story in his own words. It's time for the truth, from the Father of Lies!  As he begins his journal, young Shim of Gitta in Samaria is riding an oxcart to catch a ship to Egypt. His whole village has pooled their resources to send him to the Academy in Alexandria, hoping he will return with the knowledge and connections to rise in the Roman administration. Shim has other plans, involving the mysteries buried in the arcane texts and lost tombs of that ancient land. Suddenly he spies a man, beaten and bloody, almost dead by the side of the road...

Thus begins A Search in Secret Egypt, the first volume of The Acts of Simon Magus. In it we learn of Shim's early life: his roving father, his dead brother (who won't leave him alone) and the village witch-woman who has doomed him to a mysterious, inconvenient quest. In Alexandria he moves into a tomb, studies under protoChristian philosopher Philo, participates in an epic hoax and, with the sorceress Selene, reaches for the ultimate power in a Lovecraftian climax.

In future volumes, Shim's story will see him

• lead his own charismatic cult to become Simon Magus, Great Power of God
• find Holy Wisdom in a brothel
• participate in the odd events surrounding an execution in Jerusalem
• have a hot night with a future saint
• clash with the devotees of a strange new sect
• travel to the ends of Earth and beyond

climaxing in an epic magical contest in Rome.
