The technology includes a new class of radio antenna and electronics that provide broadband capabilities for Very Long Baseline Interferometry, or VLBI. This technique is used to make precise measurements of Earth in space and time. VLBI measurements have been conducted for decades using a worldwide network of stations that carry out coordinated observations of very distant astronomical objects called quasars. To meet the demand for more precise measurements, a new global network of stations, called the VLBI Global Observing System, or VGOS, is being rolled out to replace the legacy network. NASA is participating in this next-generation network and just completed the installation of a joint NASA-U.S. Naval Observatory VGOS station at NASA's K?ke'e Park Geophysical Observatory in Hawaii. NASA has two other developmental VGOS stations operating at the Goddard Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Haystack Observatory in Westford, Massachusetts. With this preliminary network, NASA passed a crucial milestone on February 5: conducting the first demonstration anywhere in the world of broadband observations for VLBI over a long baseline.

"The successful tests demonstrate the viability of the new broadband antenna technology for making the kinds of observations needed for improved accuracy in measurements of the very fine-scale shape of Earth," said Benjamin R. Phillips, who leads NASA's Earth Surface and Interior Focus Area at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The coordinated observation was verified by detection of fringes -- an interference pattern indicating that all three stations were receiving and could combine the signals from the quasar they observed. "The testing has been a concerted effort involving many team members at all three stations, as well as the MIT correlator facility," said Pedro Elosegui of the Haystack Observatory, which leads the NASA development of the VGOS signal chain. Several technical hurdles had to be cleared to carry out the long-baseline demonstration. One issue is that the effects of the ionosphere -- a layer of Earth's upper atmosphere that impacts the behavior of radio waves -- and of the local weather are quite different at the three sites. Another factor, which applies in any VLBI measurement, is that stations have to contend with interference from nearby radio and cell towers and other sources. "These and other technical issues have been dealt with," said Goddard's Stephen Merkowitz, manager of NASA's Space Geodesy Project. "We have a few more challenges down the road, but they are manageable. We now know that the new global system can be used the way it was intended." The broadband antenna and electronics provide improved sensitivity in a scaled-down package. With dish sizes of 12 to 13 meters (about 39 to 42 feet), the next-generation antennas are designed to be smaller than most of the current system's dishes, which are typically 20 to 30 meters (about 65 to 100 feet). The scaled-down size allows an antenna to move quickly, conducting up to 100 observations in an hour compared to about 12 observations in an hour for the current VLBI system. This type of antenna is also much less expensive than the larger antennas, making it more economical to deploy and operate a global network. Broadband capability makes it possible to conduct observations in four bands -- that is, at four frequencies -- at the same time, whereas current VLBI systems operate in two bands. With four bands, more bits can be recorded at once, so the broadband system can achieve data rates of 8 to 16 gigabits per second, which is about 1000 times the data rate for HDTV. (The current VLBI system has a typical rate of 256 megabits per second.) This leads to better sensitivity, even though the antenna is smaller. Another new feature is that the four bands are selectable within a range of 2 gigahertz to roughly 14 gigahertz. This helps to avoid interference with other sources, such as radio and cellphone towers. With the rollout of the VGOS network, existing VLBI stations are being replaced, or in some cases upgraded. More sites will be added in the future to provide more uniform coverage across the globe. Once fully implemented, the worldwide VGOS network is expected to yield position and Earth orientation measurements that improve precision by a factor of three or more, compared to current measurements. "The next-generation VLBI system will expand our ability to make the kinds of measurements that will be needed for geophysical studies and navigation applications, which demand more precision all the time," said Merkowitz.

According to thousands of underground tunnels that stretch from North Scotland towards the Mediterranean the answer is a big yes. While the reason behind these sophisticated tunnels remains a mystery, many experts believe that this huge 12,000 year old network was built as a protection against predators and other dangers 12000 years ago. Some experts believe that these mysterious tunnels were used as modern-day highways, allowing the transition of people and connecting them to distant places across Europe.

In the book Secrets Of The Underground Door To An Ancient World, ("Gates to the Ancient Underworld") German title: Tore zur Unterwelt, German archaeologist Dr Heinrich Kush states that evidence of huge underground tunnels has been found under dozens of Neolithic settlements all over the European continent. These tremendous tunnels are often referred to as ancient highways.
According to Dr Kusch, the fact that many of these tunnels still exist today, after 12000 years indicates that the tunnels must have been both complex and huge in size. “Across Europe there were thousands of them says Dr Kusch,” in Germany we have discovered hundreds of meters of underground tunnels. In Austria we have found hundreds more. These underground tunnels can be found everywhere across Europe and there are thousands of them.” Said the German archaeologist. While some of the tunnels are relatively small- some of them measure over a meter in width, there are other tunnels that have been found with underground chambers and storage areas. The fact that these tunnels have been found points towards incredible ancient ingenuity which is anything but what history books tells us today. Ancient mankind had the knowledge and tools to build complex structures over ten thousand years ago. Evidence of that are the Pyramids of Bosnia in Europe and their incredible underground tunnels that go on for kilometers.
Dr Kusch states that ‘Across Europe there were thousands of these tunnels – from the north in Scotland down to the Mediterranean. They are interspersed with nooks, at some places it’s larger and there is seating, or storage chambers and rooms. They do not all link up but taken together it is a massive underground network.’ Cappadocia in Turkey is another incredible example. The underground city of Derinkuyu is another piece of evidence which points towards the perfection and long-lost construction methods of our ancestors. The underground city of Derinkuyu is perhaps one of the greatest achievements in underground construction together with the huge network of tunnels. The geological features of the stone from Derinkuyu is something that is very important; it is very soft. Thus, the ancient builders of Derinkuyu had to be very careful when building these underground chambers providing enough pillar strength to support the floors above; if this was not achieved, the city would have collapsed, but so far, archaeologists have not found evidence of any “cave-ins” at Derinkuyu. Other ancient monuments such as Gobekli Tepe are more pieces of crucial evidence that point towards incredible skills and knowledge by people who inhabited our planet over ten thousand years ago. According to Dr Kusch, chapels were often built at the entrances to the underground tunnels because the Church were afraid of the heathen legacy the tunnels might have represented, and like many other things, the church wanted to make sure word about the tunnels was kept as a secret. In some of the tunnels writings have been discovered which refer to these underground tunnels as gateways to the underworld.

 Last year, Mercedes promised it would introduce a new midsize pickup before 2020. And according to a new report from Auto Express, we can expect to see a concept version by the end of this year. Expected to bear the X-Class name, the pickup will feature styling details from the automaker's current SUVs. Look for swept-back headlights, a wide three-bar grille, narrow taillights, and a wide tailgate. Under the sheetmetal, it will share platform bits with the Nissan Navara, which is known as the Frontier in the U.S. The Mercedes-Benz X-Class should feature a double-cab arrangement on a ladder chassis, although the automaker is also eyeing a single cab offering. It will likely come with four- and six-cylinder engines fueled by gas or diesel. The pickup will complement the automaker's light commercial vehicle offerings, including the Sprinter, Vito, and Citan vans. Different versions of the X-Class will appeal to different customers; a passenger-oriented model will feature luxurious amenities like leather and wood trim while other trucks will suit commercial purposes. The pickup is poised to compete with the up-market Volkswagen Amarok. Auto Express says we can expect to see the X-Class concept at the Paris auto show in October. But it could be over a year until a production version finally goes on sale. According to Mercedes vans boss Volker Mornhinweg, the pickup will launch by the end of 2017. No word on whether the model will make its way to the U.S., but it should definitely hit Mercedes van dealerships in Germany and the U.K.

Idol found in Germany

Oldest ever Idol discovered so far is the Lion-Man ivory scultpure, which is estimated to be 40000 years old. It was discovered in the Hohlenstein-Stadel, a German cave in 1939. This 29.6 cm (11.7 inches) in height, 5.6 cm wide, and 5.9 cm thick sculpture. It was carved out of woolly mammoth ivory using a flint stone knife. Seven parallel, transverse, carved gouges are on the left arm. It is now in the museum in Ulm, Germany. By 2015, the ancient figurine was more appropriately being called a lion-headed figurine and identified as Löwenmensch. Most of its pieces were found in 1939 in a cave named Stadel-Höhle in Hohlenstein  Mountain in the Lone valley in the Swabian Alb, Germany.
