KM Conference 2013 - Novi Sad, Serbia

Come and Enjoy the Beautiful Novi Sad, Serbia

The Republic of Serbia is situated in the southeast of Europe, in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. It covers the area of 88.361 km2 and has a population of 7.5 million. Although Serbs account for the largest proportion, Serbia is home to people from over thirty different ethnicities. Novi Sad, the largest city in the Province of Vojvodina, lies on the banks of the Danube in the north of Serbia. For those who appreciate art, music, food and fun, but prefer a place that is less frenetic than Belgrade (which is said to sleep less than New York!), Novi Sad is a perfect choice. It is an interesting and pleasant combination of urban sophistication and bohemian relaxation. Famous for its multiethnic character, the city is often called "a haven of tranquility and tolerance".
Novi Sad has a picturesque centre, and its old streets with the orthodox, catholic, protestant churches, as well as the synagogue, testify of cultural and religious diversity in this region. The fortress of Petrovaradin dominates the Danube offering a wonderful view of the city and a maze of underground passages and tunnels waiting to be explored. Every summer the music festival EXIT takes place within its walls attracting people from all over the world. The international, open-minded spirit of the city can be seen everywhere, including the local cuisine. To its visitors Novi Sad offers a unique gastronomic mixture of Serbian, Hungarian, Romanian and Slovakian traditional dishes. Many restaurants serve their specialties to the live music accompaniment of a tamburitza orchestra.
Since it was founded in 1694, Novi Sad has been an important cultural center. Today it is known for its theatre and film festivals, publishing houses, galleries and museums. It is also a university city with a modern campus and thousands of students studying at state and private higher education institutions. In the vicinity of Novi Sad there are numerous medieval monasteries, and the national park of Fruska Gora.
